 "When One Door Closes"

An anthology of essays and poems

by women and for women

This book is a fascinating and diverse collection of true, short essays and poems written by women for women.  Their personal stories focus on significant turning points in their lives or times when they found themselves standing at a threshold, or on the cusp of major decision or a life changing event.

The women who have contributed to this anthology have shared the accounts of their personal struggles, difficult decisions, triumphs, heartbreaking losses, moments of pure joy and times of confusion and doubt in their lives.  Their narratives offer insights, inspiration, hope, and a connection to other women who might also find themselves standing at the threshold, facing a similar life changing event or difficult decision.  Their personal accounts introduce us to women who have found strength despite profound weariness, joy despite deep loss, and courage despite overwhelming adversity.

This book shines a light on the difficult choices and provocative moments women face in their lives and how they carry on.  The author has blended the stories and experiences into a shared connection that all women can identify with on their own life’s journey.

The story behind the book

The idea for this book was born a long time ago when I realized a need in my life (and I witnessed the need in the lives of my friends, my family and my therapy clients) to have someone to talk to--someone to tell the stories of our most difficult, intimate or challenging times.

Everyone has a significant time in their life when they have been at the threshold of an important life event or faced with a turning point decision.

In my work as a psychotherapist of over 30 years, I have come to know many persons in a time of great need, contemplation or suffering. I have also witnessed many transformations as women and men have made transitions to a more accepting and loving place for themselves.  They needed to tell their stories to come to a place of peace.

I know now that this cannot be done alone.  Having someone in your life to share your story, to learn from them and to benefit from their support is, in my mind, one of the most important aspects of happiness.  There is nothing greater than a sense of connection with others--knowing there is someone else who understands you, who cares about you and who wants the best for you.  I am grateful for the many people in my life who have been there for me when I needed to tell my story and to seek support, wisdom or comfort.

I knew I had to create an opportunity for women to tell their stories in a way that would enable them to say whatever they needed to say and for others to benefit from their experiences.  Thus, the book idea was born!

To the women who shared their stories and poems for the book,    I offer a heartfelt thank you.

To everyone who reads their stories, may they offer you some inspiration and hope.

To all, may you be at peace.
